‘US News & World Report’ ranks Mayo Clinic highest for diabetes and endocrine care

In the US News & World Report’s list of “Best Hospitals of 2013-2014,” Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., was ranked No. 1 among hospitals in the United States providing diabetes and endocrine care.

“These endorsements reinforce our century-old commitment to provide the highest quality care to each patient every day. While no single set of measures can perfectly represent health care quality, we are proud to be recognized by so many. We are honored by this recognition, and we remain focused on our primary mission: putting the needs of our patients first and creating for them the best possible, most trusted and affordable model of health care for the future,” John Noseworthy, MD, Mayo Clinic’s president and CEO, said in a press release.

The diabetes and endocrinology hospital list includes nearly 1,130 hospitals, all of which are experienced in treating difficult cases. To be considered, a hospital must have treated at least 163 inpatients requiring a high level of expertise in the specialty in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Hospitals are also included if enough specialists recommended the hospital for these patients.

The top 10 hospitals for diabetes and endocrinology named in the report include:

  1. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
  2. Cleveland Clinic, Ohio
  3. Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
  4. Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
  5. UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco
  6. Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Conn.
  7. New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, New York, N.Y.
  8. University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle
  9. Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston
  10. Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago

The rankings for this specialty are based on a score that accounts for a hospital’s reputation among specialists, survival rates, success in keeping patients safe, patient volume and nurse staffing.

The top five hospitals for diabetes and endocrinology also received high rankings overall. Among the US News & World Report’s 18 Honor Roll hospitals, Mayo Clinic was No. 3, Cleveland Clinic was No. 4, Massachusetts General Hospital was No. 2, Johns Hopkins was No. 1 and UCSF Medical Center was No. 7.
