The Endocrine Society has launched an international exchange program that pairs US medical centers with international medical centers to enhance global opportunities in endocrine care, according to a press release.

“We are very excited to lead such a unique international collaboration and, more importantly, give back to the world endocrine community,” William F. Young Jr., MD, president of The Endocrine Society, said in the release. “Throughout my professional career, I have been fortunate to participate in such exchanges, which I consider life-changing experiences.”

The program involves a two-person team, including one established endocrinologist and a trainee, serving as ambassadors for their institution and representatives of The Endocrine Society.

Gary D. Hammer, MD, PhD, a member of The Endocrine Society and an endocrinologist at the University of Michigan, recently visited the Seth G.S. Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) in Mumbai, India, with colleague Tobias Else, MD.

“The 2 weeks we spent in Mumbai at KEM with Dr. Nalini Shah and her department of endocrinology was an incredibly enriching experience for all,” Hammer said in the release. “The KEM team has incredible clinical acumen, an unparalleled dedication to their patients and a passion for research. We learned from each other the importance of the cultural context of endocrine disease manifestation and patient care. Together we share a vision for long-lasting relationships that advance research, education and clinical care of patients with endocrine diseases.”

The KEM doctors will visit Hammer and Else at the University of Michigan in June. Another exchange will occur in April with South Africa.
