The New Jersey Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee recently voted 9-1 in favor of legislation that allows residents with diabetes to voluntarily note the disease on their driver’s license. This comes 1 year after the bill’s introduction.
Patients who live in New Jersey and have diabetes will now be given the opportunity to voluntarily designate whether they have the disease, if they are insulin-dependent or if they are susceptible to convulsive seizures, according to the statute. The notation of diabetes will be displayed clearly on the individual’s driver’s license as: “Insulin-dependent diabetic,” by the Motor Vehicle Commission. Several states have implemented similar laws in recent years.
