The National Bone Health Alliance has begun its 2Million2Many call-to-action campaign, urging patients and health care professionals alike to request a test for osteoporosis when a patient aged 50 years or older sustains a bone fracture.

The campaign was introduced at the Osteoporosis Summit in Washington, D.C., this year.

According to the National Bone Health Alliance (NBHA), there are 2 million bone breaks per year, yet only two in 10 receive follow-up tests or treatment for osteoporosis. By 2025, NBHA predicts the number of annual fractures will increase to approximately 3 million, costing the health care system roughly $25 billion per year, the group said in a press release.

NBHA has launched a program website (www.2million2many.org), which highlights events, resources, news, and interactive multimedia and printable information posters for physicians, patients and advocates.

The group also is seeking a grant from the CMS Innovation Center to support a better fracture liaison service model of care to the Medicare population.
