A decrease in loss of lean body mass and appendicular skeletal muscle mass was observed after treatment with growth hormone for six months following laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding, according to the findings from a recent trial.

The researchers randomly assigned 12 women to a low calorie diet and exercise regimen plus GH, and 12 women to diet and exercise without GH.

Loss of fat mass was higher (P=.02) and loss of lean body mass was lower (P<.0001) in the GH treatment group at three months. Loss of appendicular skeletal muscle mass was lower in the GH treatment group vs. the group without GH treatment (P=.000).

For fat mass (P=.0005) and fat-free mass (P<.0002), the percent of change was higher in the GH treatment group.
