FDA, retailer recall supplements containing steroids

The FDA and Bodybuilding.com have announced a voluntary recall of all lots of 65 dietary supplements that may contain steroids.

The recalled products are believed to contain steroid ingredients such as superdrol, madol, tren, androstenedione and/or turinabol. For a full list of the recalled supplements, visit the FDA website.

Steroid-containing products may cause acute liver injury, shrinkage of the testes, male infertility, masculinization of women, breast enlargement in men, short stature in children, predilection for abuse of other drugs and alcohol, and increased risk for myocardial infarction, stroke and death.

The retailer said it has not received any reports of adverse events in connection with the recalled products. Further, the retailer received assurances from manufacturers of the recalled products that they were properly classified as dietary supplements in compliance with federal law.

The FDA encourages consumers to stop using any recalled supplements in their possession and contact a physician if any adverse events occur. Consumers should return any unused products to the retailer.

Adverse events should be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
