SAN DIEGO — In this video perspective, Healio Dermatology Chief Medical Editor Joel M. Gelfand, MD, MSCE, discusses highlights from the LITE study on home vs. office-based phototherapy for plaque or guttate psoriasis.

“Patients inspired us to do this work,” Gelfand, James J. Leyden Professor of Dermatology & Epidemiology at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, said at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting. “Many patients want to try phototherapy for psoriasis and want to try it at home, but there is an evidence gap in the United States.”

Gelfand said the LITE study is an example of a new form of research in dermatology: pragmatic, real-world research embedded in routine care, but with randomization to eliminate the forms of biases often seen with observational data. The study also assessed effectiveness across skin types.

“I encourage my colleagues to consider the use of home phototherapy for patients with psoriasis when it is medically appropriate, based on your shared decision-making with your patient,” Gelfand said.
