VIDEO: Framework may help researchers better address bias, structural racism in CV care

Key takeaways:

  • Bias, social determinants of health and structural racism all play a role in the quality of cardiovascular care.
  • A new framework may help researchers figure out how to improve these issues.

In this Healio video exclusive, Khadijah Breathett, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA, FHFSA, discusses a framework she co-created to better help researchers address bias, social determinants of health and structural racism in CV care.

Breathett, associate professor of medicine in the division of cardiology, advanced HF/transplant specialist and leader of health equity research at Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana University Health and a member of the Healio | Cardiology Today Editorial Board, spoke with Healio about a framework that she created with Kimberly D. Manning, MD, professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, to help researchers identify the right questions, populations, methods and collaborators to shed light on how to improve issues created by bias, social determinants of health and structural racism in CV care. The framework was created as part of the American Heart Association’s 100-year anniversary and was published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.

“People that care about this space might consider this figure when moving forward with developing a study question,” Breathett told Healio. “Starting off with the right conceptual model and the right framework will put the team at an advantage toward actually achieving cardiovascular equity.”
