ATLANTA — In this Healio video exclusive, Pamela S. Douglas, MD, MACC, FASE, FAHA, discusses an American College of Cardiology initiative created to increase diversity and equity in clinical trials research leadership.
Women and people from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds remain less represented in research leadership and there is a great need for education, mentorship, professional development and mentoring, Douglas, the Ursula Geller Professor of Research in Cardiovascular Diseases at Duke University and past president of the ACC, said during the ACC Scientific Session. The ACC Clinical Trials Research Program’s new Project REACH includes 28 structural heart cardiologists and surgeons who will participate in a yearlong curriculum designed to advance their skills and careers, Douglas said.
“There are significant health disparities in this population with this disease with underrepresentation of, for example, [transcatheter aortic valve replacement] patients among African Americans in the United States, but more important, there is underrepresentation among the leaders of research,” Douglas said. “We need to change that to improve the quality of research that is done, to ask better questions, to enroll more diverse populations, to make sure we have opportunities for talented people of all races and both genders.”
