Feb. 3 is Wear Red Day. In support of women’s heart health, Healio and Cardiology Today have curated a list of recent updates in women’s heart health.
Updates include a lecture given by Cardiology Today Editorial Board Member Nanette K. Wenger, MD, MACC, MACP, FAHA, FASPC, on gaps in knowledge and care delivery for women with CVD; how certain contraceptives can increase risk for thrombotic events in women with obesity; sex-specific considerations for women presenting with angina; and more.
Premature menopause associated with HF, AF risk
Women with a history of premature menopause, defined as menopause before age 40 years, are more likely to develop HF or atrial fibrillation over 9 years of follow-up compared with women without premature menopause, data show. Read more
Wenger: ‘Cultural shift’ needed when presenting CV research data for women, men
Pervasive gaps in knowledge and care delivery persist that require urgent attention to reduce sex-based disparities and achieve equity in CV care and outcomes, according to a speaker. Read more
Certain contraceptives may increase risk for thrombotic events in women with obesity
Use of combined oral contraceptives in women with obesity may confer elevated CV risk in the form of venous and arterial thromboembolism, researchers reported. Read more
Women more likely than men to have adverse events after AF ablation
Among patients who had catheter ablation for AF, women were more likely than men to require hospitalization for more than 1 day, to have major adverse events and to have poor quality of life outcomes. Read more
Assess CVD risk when considering hormone therapy for menopause symptoms
Menopausal hormone therapy can help alleviate severe vasomotor symptoms, but cardiologists should assess CV risk and consider several other factors when evaluating these patients. Read more
More steps improve CV risk factors, but effects vary by sex
Smartphone-recorded steps over 2 years were linked to positive changes in CVD risk factors but varied between men and women, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Read more
Limited postpartum follow-up may miss hypertension after delivery
Data from a large safety-net hospital show de novo postpartum hypertension occurs in one of 10 patients in the year after delivery, with nearly half from the delivery hospitalization. Read more
Consider sex-specific imaging differences for women presenting with angina
Sex-specific differences in the performance of noninvasive testing for ischemic heart disease necessitate a sex-based diagnostic workup with a multimodality approach to better understand women’s chest pain symptoms. Read more
‘Treatment bias,’ worrying trends persist for younger women with MI
Mortality from CAD has fallen dramatically in the U.S. overall during the past 40 years due to rapid progress in prevention and treatment strategies, yet data show younger women have not benefited from this trend. Read more
Breast arterial calcification from mammogram may predict CV risk in women
Breast arterial calcification measured during mammography is a readily available surrogate marker of atherosclerotic CVD and may predict subclinical CAD and microvascular disease. Read more
