VIDEO: Digital technology can be used to promote health, wellness

In this Healio video exclusive, David D. McManus, MD, discusses ideas that were exchanged at the Heart Rhythm Society’s inaugural HRX meeting regarding the use of digital technology to promote health and wellness.

McManus, professor and chair of the department of medicine at the UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health, said the challenge is that “the populations that are most resistant to use of technology are those we need to use them the most in” for changing behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity and poor sleep habits.

“Our panel discussion focused on a few very practical projects, one of which was oriented around incorporating technology in the process of promoting healthy lifestyle choices around food purchasing,” McManus said. “Another talk focused on use of technology to improve diabetes outcomes. Personalization was one of the themes that emerged as a real key to drive long-term use of technology [for] changing behavior.”
