RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — In this Healio video exclusive, Ulrika Birgersdotter-Green, MD, discusses the “unique differences” between men and women with atrial fibrillation.

Birgersdotter-Green, professor of medicine and director of pacemaker and ICD services at University of California, San Diego Health, who spoke at the Cardiometabolic Health Congress Women’s Cardiometabolic Health and Wellness Masterclass, said women with AF are challenging to manage because while they have elevated risk for disabling stroke, they are less likely than men to be treated with oral anticoagulants or referred for ablation.

“Modifying risk factors, so we don’t even get to atrial fibrillation, really is key,” she said.
