New stent sizes to treat larger blood vessels launched

Fact checked byRichard Smith

Abbott announced it received FDA approval, CE mark approval in Europe, and Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency approval in Japan, and has launched new 4.5 mm and 5 mm stent sizes.

According to a company press release, these new stent sizes (XIENCE Skypoint) enable physicians to deliver care to patients with larger blood vessels.

The company’s stent is now the only drug-eluting stent with 1- and 3-month dual antiplatelet therapy labeling for U.S. patients at high bleeding risk, according to the release.

“Abbott’s tools give physicians the precision they need to treat patients; to have visibility into arteries, and remove blockages to help patients heal faster,” Alex Nepogodiev, divisional vice president of Abbott’s vascular business, said in the release. “The XIENCE family of stents is designed with unique attributes that make it an excellent choice for large vessels — this includes excellent longitudinal strength and features that allow it to be placed precisely in the location needed.”
