Nancy K. Sweitzer, MD, PhD, spoke with Healio about results from the AVATAR trial presented at this year’s American Heart Associaton Scientific Sessions.

The trial evaluated surgical aortic valve replacement among asymptomatic patients with severe aortic stenosis.

Sweitzer, director of the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center and professor of medicine and chief of the division of cardiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, noted that these patients may present to HF clinics or general cardiology practices to monitor aortic valves, despite that “by definition, they are patients who don’t have heart failure because they’re asymptomatic.”

She noted that the trial found that “there was benefit of valve replacement in this population, and I think that’s very interesting and important; that there’s something going on in these people in the cardiovascular system even in the absence of symptoms. That is important, and the trial adds to those data.”
