PAD Awareness Month calls attention to amputation risks, screening, treatments

September is Peripheral Artery Disease Awareness Month, designed to improve access to screening and treatments for patients with PAD.
According to the CardioVascular Coalition, approximately 20 million Americans have PAD, and about 200,000 patients per year undergo avoidable amputations. Many of these patients are from historically underrepresented backgrounds, according to the coalition.
As part of this year’s PAD Awareness Month activities, the coalition is calling for Congress to block planned cuts to Medicare specialty providers, including vascular surgeons, cardiac surgeons and interventional radiologists, all of whom treat PAD.

Among patients with PAD who underwent revascularization, those with concomitant clinical evidence of CAD received greater absolute benefit of reduced risk for MACE from taking low-dose rivaroxaban than those with PAD without CAD. Read more
