FDA issues warning on OTC 'homeopathic' asthma products

The FDA is warning consumers not to rely on asthma products sold over the counter and labeled as homeopathic because the agency has not evaluated these products for safety or efficacy, according to a press release.

Patients with inappropriately treated and managed asthma may experience wheezing, shortness of breath, and could be at risk for life-threatening asthma attacks that may require hospitalization.

The FDA said these OTC asthma products, listed as homeopathic, are distributed through retail stores and available on the Internet. Many are marketed as being “natural” and “safe and effective.”

The FDA advises consumers to consult with a health care provider on how to better treat and manage their asthma. The agency also advises consumers and physicians to report any adverse reactions related to OTC asthma products labeled as homeopathic to the agency.
