I grew up the oldest of six children in a white family. During my first few years of life, my father attended medical school while my mother focused on raising us in St. Louis. Ms. Artie, our part-time nanny who was black, helped my parents care for us. To us, Artie was part of our family. We were taught to respect people, without regard to race, gender or religion.

On Jan. 1, 2018, CMS removed total knee arthroplasty from the inpatient-only list for Medicare beneficiaries, which created a significant change for surgeons, patients and hospitals in part due to the implementation of the Two-Midnight Rule. Despite efforts by CMS to provide some clarity in this regard, it remained somewhat unclear to hospitals and physicians which patient cases should be coded as inpatient or outpatient, and many of them were identified on a case-by-case basis where a given surgery would be performed.

Thursday night was date night with my wife. We had a reservation at a lower Manhattan restaurant that takes months in advance to get a reservation. The night was a special evening for us. The multicourse meal was filled with amazing dishes with fantastic flavors and great scents and an amazing wine to complement the chef’s selections of contemporary Asian cuisine. This would be the last meal my wife and I would taste or smell for more than 2 weeks.
