In a video interview, Erica Elizabeth Marsh, MD, MSCI, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Michigan Medical School, discussed:
- recent advancements in uterine fibroid treatment, including radiological interventions and MRI-guided focused ultrasound treatments;
- evolving understanding of uterine fibroid risk factors, specifically age and race, along with “protective” risk factors that are associated with lower risk;
- methods to screen for uterine fibroids, along with challenges for how to help patients recognize symptoms and information crucial to creating a productive relationship between patient and provider;
- new classes of medications for fibroids, including GnRH antagonist, an oral-based medication that reduces the flow of estrogen and progesterone to help prevent fibroids;
- and how treatment plans should differ between patients, including what to take into account and what risk factors to consider, and how a patient’s desires are the most important factor.
