Boston Children’s Hospital ranked top US hospital for pediatric pulmonology, lung surgery

Boston Children’s Hospital has been named the No. 1 hospital in the country for pediatric pulmonology and lung surgery in the U.S. News & World Report 2020-2021 Best Children’s Hospital rankings.

The 14th annual Best Children’s Hospital rankings help families facing complex and rare conditions find the best medical care for their children. Data collection for these rankings is based on surgical outcomes, patient safety, clinical resources, family centeredness and expert opinions from 15,000 surveyed physicians.

The Best Children’s Hospital rankings highlight the top 50 centers in the following pediatric specialties: cancer; cariology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; neonatology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology and lung surgery; and urology.

The top 10 U.S. hospitals for pediatric pulmonology and lung surgery in the 2020-2021 report are:

  • Boston Children’s Hospital;
  • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia;
  • Texas Children’s Hospital;
  • Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center;
  • Children’s Hospital Colorado;
  • Nationwide Children’s Hospital;
  • Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford;
  • St. Louis Children’s Hospital-Washington University;
  • Children’s National Hospital; and
  • UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

“Any hospital ranked among the nation’s best in pediatric pulmonology and lung surgery tends to have a track record of good outcomes in diseases ranging from pediatric asthma to cystic fibrosis, a demonstrated ability to keep young patients on ventilators alive, a robust lung transplant program, clinical research and training, and strong infection control in the ICU and throughout the hospital,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News & World Report, told Healio. “Hospitals such as Boston Children’s, which ranked No. 1 in that specialty this year, demonstrate all those qualities and more.”

Additionally, Boston Children’s Hospital was named the No. 1 pediatric hospital overall for the seventh consecutive year. Boston Children’s Hospital was also the top hospital for pediatric nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, and urology.

“Across our nation, health care professionals are striving against unprecedented challenges to provide the best possible care to each of their patients,” Harder said in the release. “The nurses, doctors and other professionals at the best children’s hospitals have demonstrated a track record of delivering top-notch care to children with diverse medical needs.”
