NEW YORK — Recent systemic changes in the delivery of health care have made it more challenging for today’s doctor trainees, Carol A. Bernstein, MD, said at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting.

“We’ve been extremely concerned about the status of our trainees as they go about learning to become physicians in this new era,” Bernstein, professor of psychiatry and vice chair of faculty development and well-being in the department of psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said in this Healio video.

Doctor trainees work long hours and have little time to process stressful events and deal with illness, dying and death, she said.

“We are hoping that by shedding light on challenges faced by doctors and others in the world with regard to depression and anxiety and other mental health conditions and by improving access to care for everyone we will be able to provide a better environment in which to train the future doctors of America,” Bernstein said.
