SAN FRANCISCO — The FBI’s San Francisco field office is working with schools and local communities to create multidisciplinary cross-functional teams to prevent violence, FBI special agent Greg A. Concepcion says in this Healio video.

Concepcion spoke on a panel about school shooting prevention at the American Psychiatric Association meeting.

“We can’t solve violence prevention through arresting people alone or law enforcement tools,” Concepcion said. “We have to reach out to our mental health providers who are trained to provide a clinical diagnosis and identify those people in crisis, if there is a mental illness component, to help us understand where this person in crisis might be.

“We want to work jointly with ... school counselors, mental health counselors and individuals in houses of worship who might identify people in crisis ... who are trending to this pathway of violence. We want to get to them before they commit that act.”

He concluded: “We believe that through this holistic approach that we’re doing in San Francisco, by creating a working group that will incorporate all of these stakeholders, that this is the most successful way ... to stop violence in our schools and in our communities.”
