“The racial events of 2020 have emphasized that many white people, including in the psychiatric field, need to learn more about the biases and discrimination people of color face,” Andrew A. Nierenberg, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and editor of Psychiatric Annals, said. “This issue of Psychiatric Annals focuses on the experience many people of color encounter with limited access to affordable care and racial disparities experienced in treatment of substance use disorders.”

The November issue includes articles that focus on anti-racism, systemic racism and substance use disorder, necessary conversations regarding the intersection between race and psychiatry, tips for acting against racism in departments of psychiatry and racial disparities in perinatal mental health.

“As mental health professionals, we are not only responsible for treating those whose suffering is derived from America’s racial history, but to also agitate for positive change within the mental healthcare institutions we occupy,” Christin Drake, MD, and Dennis M. Popeo, MD, guest editors of the issue, said.
