VIDEO: New APA President plans to support early-career psychiatrists

NEW YORK — Altha J. Stewart, MD, who was recently appointed president of the American Psychiatric Association, discussed her plans to focus on helping residents and early-career psychiatrists as well as extending the organizations’ international reach during her term as president, in a video perspective recorded at the APA Annual Meeting.

Young psychiatrists face burnout and substantial student loan debt, Stewart said during her interview with Healio Psychiatry. As president, she plans to focus on strategies to help them deal with these issues and succeed in their field. She also hopes to expand the APA’s reach globally. It’s important to develop programs that makes the most sense culturally to help diverse populations with mental illness, she said.
