NEW YORK — This year’s theme of the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting is “building well-being through innovation.” Many sessions will focus on technology, well-being and burnout in psychiatry.

“The annual meeting is the place to connect with psychiatrists from around the world,” Saul Levin, MD, MPA, CEO and medical director of the APA, said during a press briefing.

Expecting more than 15,000 attendees from countries all around the world, the annual meeting will include hundreds of sessions on topics including addiction, pediatric and adolescent, geriatric, forensic and consult-liaison psychiatry.

There will be discussions on collaborative care between psychiatrists, primary care providers and clinicians, the latest psychopharmacology treatments, veteran’s mental health and diversity and health equity. APA has partnered with the NIMH to offer sessions focused on personalized medicine, genomics and psychotherapy.

Key speakers include Elinore McCance-Katz, MD, PhD, Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use at the HHS, and leader of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Joshua A. Gordon, MD, PhD, Director of the NIMH and Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling U.S. Army (Ret.), national security, intelligence and terrorism analyst for CNN.

A third national poll will be released during the meeting, which surveyed more than 1,000 American adults on the attitudes and beliefs about mental health and compared whether these participants felt more or less anxious than they did in 2017, explained Levin.

“The survey has also asked questions about current topics in public health, including gun violence and the opioid epidemic,” Levin said in the briefing.

An “Innovation Zone” will serve as a space for young leaders in psychiatry to present and explore new technologies for improving the clinician-patient interaction and advancing the future of psychiatry. This year, the “Innovation Zone” will highlight wearable-technology for mental health, artificial intelligence and apps and hashtags used in recovery.

The meeting takes place May 5 to 9 in New York City.

Healio Psychiatry will be onsite in New York throughout the meeting, so stay tuned for the latest news and developments, videos, physician perspectives, and more.
