The APA recently announced strong support for the nomination of Jerome Adams, MD, MPH, as the next U.S. Surgeon General.

“Dr. Adams is highly qualified to meet the demands of this post,” Saul Levin, MD, MPA, CEO and medical director of the APA, said in a press release. “As a former D.C. health director, I believe Dr. Adams will capably meet the task of integrating mental health and substance abuse challenges into the broader public health conversation. We urge the Senate to swiftly confirm him.”

On July 15, the APA Board of Trustees voted unanimously to endorse Adams.

Adams has served as the state health commissioner in Indiana since 2014.

In addition to his career as an anesthesiologist, Adams is an associate professor of clinical anesthesia at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

In his role as Indiana state health commissioner, Adams expanded access to naloxone to address the opioid crisis.

In July 2016, Adams issued an order that allowed various entities, including pharmacies, local health departments, and addiction treatment facilities, to register as authorized naloxone dispensers.

“The APA appreciates Dr. Adams’ practical approaches to complex substance use disorder problems,” Levin said in the release.
