SAN DIEGO — Francis Lee, MD, PhD, of Weill Cornell Medical College at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital, and colleagues conducted research that indicated a sensitive period in adolescence for how adolescents handle fear.

“To our surprise, during adolescence there seems to be a period of increased capacity to learn within the hippocampus, where humans are able to learn how to extinguish fears more readily during that period of time,” Lee told Healio/Psychiatry. “It suggests a new way of thinking about how we treat fear-related disorders in the future.”

In this video, Lee discusses how this research may impact clinical practice.
