NIMH commends recipients of 2016 Colvin Prize
The NIMH recently announced that Francis McMahon, MD, chief of the Human Genetics Branch at the NIMH, received the 2016 Colvin Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Mood Disorders Research from the Brain and Behavioral Research Foundation.
McMahon began his tenure at the NIMH in 2002 to develop a new genetics unit within the Intramural Research Program. His research currently focuses on identifying genes that contribute to risk for mood and anxiety disorders in an effort to improve diagnostic and treatment methods.
Additionally, NIMH grantees Thomas Schulze, MD, of the University of Munich, and Pamela Sklar, MD, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, received the Colvin Prize.
Schulze’s research focuses on the genotype-phenotype relationship in psychiatric disorders, while Sklar’s research focuses on genetic causes of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
The NIMH also congratulated Vikram Patel, PhD, FMedSci, co-founder of Sangath, and Charles Reynolds, III, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, for receiving the Brain and Behavioral Research Foundation’s 2016 Pardes Humanitarian Prize in Mental Health.
Patel focuses on improving mental health care in developing countries and Reynolds has made significant contributions to prevention and treatment of depression in older adults.
