SAN ANTONIO — In this video, Pam Pietruszewski, MA, of the National Council for Behavioral Health, walks through the steps of SBIRT, or Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment, an intervention for risky substance use behaviors.

The model integrates behavioral health, primary care and addiction and substance use disorder services.

Approximately 5% of the US population meet criteria for a substance use disorder, Pietruszewski told Healio.com/Psychiatry.

SBIRT can help identify patients at higher risk for future problems, based on their substance use habits.
