The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded up to $54 million in Assisted Outpatient Treatment grants over the next 4 years to address needs of individuals with serious mental illness.

The grants will support a 4-year pilot program that focuses on implementing and evaluating new assisted outpatient treatment programs and identifying evidence-based practices to reduce incidence and duration of psychiatric hospitalization, homelessness, incarcerations and encounters with the criminal justice system, according to a SAMHSA press release.

As many as 17 grantees will be funded with up to $1 million each year for up to 4 years.
