NIH names new NIMH director

The NIH recently announced the appointment of Joshua A. Gordon, PhD, of Columbia University Medical Center and New York State Psychiatric Institute, as incoming director of the NIMH.

Gordon currently serves as associate professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and research psychiatrist at New York Psychiatric Institute. He is also the associate director of the Adult Psychiatric Residency Program at these institutions.

Gordon has conducted research relating to schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and depression. Specifically, he has analyzed neural activity in mice with mutations associated with psychiatric disease when he began his tenure at Columbia University in 2004.

In addition, he maintains a general psychiatric practice providing care for individuals with schizophrenia, anxiety and depression.

Since 2012, he has been a member of the depression task force at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation.

Gordon has received the NARSAD Young Investigator award from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, the Rising Star award from the International Mental Health Organization, A.E. Bennett Research Award from the Society of Biological Psychiatry and Daniel H. Efron Research Award from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology.

He will begin his appointment in September.
