ATLANTA — John T. Walkup, MD, professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, provides several important takeaways regarding anxiety in children and adolescents.
“Anxiety disorders are extremely common,” Walkup told Healio.com/Psychiatry. “At least 8% to 10% will experience anxiety disorder in the prepubertal period — much more common than depression and bipolar disorder during this time period.”
Walkup describes various physical symptoms that children with anxiety experience and explains how clinicians should address environmental or familial factors that inhibit children and adolescents’ recovery.
