ATLANTA — Elspeth "Cam" Ritchie, MD, MPH, of the Society of Uniformed Services Psychiatrists, explains how psychiatrists and mental health professionals can address sexual health and intimacy among service members who have been injured in combat.
Approximately 2.7 million service members have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and of those, an estimated 50,000 have been wounded, according to Ritchie.
“Make sure you ask about sexual health with your patients, make sure you counsel them about sexual side effects and be thinking about how you can make it easier for your patients with severe injuries to have successful intimate relationships,” Ritchie told Healio.com/Psychiatry.
