ATLANTA — Susan Samuels, MD, child and adolescent psychiatrist at New York-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, emphasizes the burden of psychiatric comorbidities of chronic illness and how clinicians can manage them in adolescents.
“Some studies show that up to 50% of children with diabetes will have some psychiatric disorder at some point in their life,” Samuels told Healio.com/Psychiatry.
Samuels and colleagues found high rates of depression and anxiety among children and adolescents with diabetes. Interestingly, some children with anxiety symptoms had better adherence to their medical regimen.
