VIDEO: Advancing discovery of objective diagnostic methods for PTSD

ATLANTA — In this video, Charles R. Marmar, MD, chairman of the department of psychiatry at New York University Langone Medical Center, emphasizes the shift from relying on subjective measures of symptoms such as patient reports to objective measures such as blood tests and brain imaging to diagnosis PTSD.

“Diagnosing war fighters and veterans is not always easy, in part because of the deep stigma patients have acknowledging their subjective suffering,” Marmar told Healio.com/Psychiatry.

During their symposium, Marmar and colleagues presented a number of new findings exploring the genetics for risk and resilience of combat-related PTSD, risk genes for PTSD, blood chemistry of PTSD, endocrine and metabolism disturbances in PTSD and more.
