APA 2016 to highlight new clinical research, explore future of the field

ATLANTA — The 169th annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association will feature innovative clinical research and practice-related sessions on topics including pediatric and adolescent psychiatry, telepsychiatry, new care models, substance abuse issues, PTSD and more.
The meeting will take place from May 14 to 18 in Atlanta.
The theme of this year’s meeting is “Psychiatry: Claiming Our Future.”
“Our passion for and commitment to providing high-quality, effective treatments for all persons with mental disorders will not change, but we must adapt to meet the demands of an ever more complex, evolving world. This means that education and professional growth are extremely important,” Renée L. Binder, MD, president of the APA, wrote.

Many sessions at the meeting will address practice management issues, such as psychiatry’s role within new models of care and meeting patient needs while simultaneously maintaining a satisfying medical career, according to Binder.
In addition, Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, director of the CDC, will present the William C. Menninger Lecture at the Convocation of Distinguished Fellows, General Robert B. Neller will discuss mental health issues in the Marine Corps, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will join the meeting in a special session to discuss connections between U.S. courts and global issues.

The APA and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) have partnered to present a series of sessions on substance abuse issues. Nora D. Volkow, MD, director of the NIDA, will chair a session assessing marijuana risks in a changing environment, and Wilson Compton, MD, deputy director of the NIDA, will discuss integrated treatment of both tobacco addiction and psychiatric disorders.
Presidential symposia will explore issues for child and adolescent psychiatry in the 21st century, new strategies in geriatric psychiatry, the delivery of psychiatric care through videoconferencing, new nomenclature for medications, and more.
