CMS has called for public comments regarding an electronic health record measure of antipsychotic use among older adults in inpatient hospital settings.

CMS has been working with Mathematica Policy Research to develop electronic clinical quality measures for use by providers in CMS quality reporting programs and reestablish existing chart or claims-based measures as electronic clinical quality measures.

Regarding the antipsychotic measure, CMS is seeking to understand if the measure is able to:

  • increase understanding of the amount of antipsychotics prescribed and administered in the inpatient setting;
  • improve prescribing practices and reduce variation in use of antipsychotics;
  • easily gather data from electronic data sources;
  • identify significant quality gaps that justify changes in workflow to include discrete measurement of antipsychotics and nonpharmacological interventions; and
  • provide useful indicators of appropriate, patient-centered care.

The public comment period opened on April 15 and closes May 15.
