LAS VEGAS — Raymond Tamasi, president and CEO of Gosnold on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, discusses his presentation on addiction and viewing it as a chronic condition that requires lifelong management.

Current practices treat addiction as an acute condition, which may not be the most effective, efficient or successful approach.

“We’re thinking about this in a much more longitudinal way and really advocating for the care of addiction as a chronic condition,” Tamasi told Healio.com/Psychiatry. “That means not only core services of hospital care or rehabilitation care and outpatient services, but also paying attention to what I call the bookends of treatment.”

These include prevention and early intervention, integration with medical care, and how to provide support post-hospitalization.
