TORONTO — In this video, Joseph F. Goldberg, MD, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, discusses the management of side effects of psychotropic medications.

Cardiovascular adverse effects such as arrhythmia, metabolic dysregulation including hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and obesity and cutaneous reactions, or drug rashes, are all common side effects of psychotropic medications that psychiatrists may not feel well-equipped to manage.

“We’ll be talking about how to evaluate side effects and how to differentiate what is a side effect of a medication from what may be an illness feature of the problem that’s being treated,” Goldberg said. “We’ll be talking about strategies for identifying side effects, tracking them, measuring them and deciding when there’s an antidote that may be a viable strategy for containing and overcoming a side effect as opposed to when a risk-benefit analysis favors stopping a medication and trying an alternative.”
