APA releases patient-friendly guide to DSM-5

The American Psychiatric Association will release a consumer guide to the DSM-5 late April, according to a press release.

The book, Understanding Mental Disorders: Your Guide to the DSM-5, will provide an easy-to-read resource on mental illness.

Understanding Mental Disorders is a unique resource that serves as a tool for communication between mental health professionals, patients, and families. It translates information from DSM-5 into simple language that can empower those who need mental health care to understand disorders and seek help. It educates in a way that allows patients to take an active role in their care,” Renee Binder, MD, APA president-elect, said in the press release.

The book will allow patients to identify risk factors and warning signs, related disorders, coping mechanisms, tips to promote mental health and personal stories, and find resources for medications and support groups.
