Boston Children’s Hospital ranked No. 1 for seventh consecutive year

Boston Children’s Hospital, once again, has claimed the top spot in U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings for Best Children’s Hospital.
This is the seventh consecutive year that Boston Children’s Hospital came in first in the 14-year competition. The hospital included four No. 1 specialties in the 10 specialties that are used to judge the competition — nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, as well as urology.
“We evaluate pediatric programs across the country by collecting hundreds of data points on each program,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor of U.S. News & World Report, told Healio. “From each program, ranging across 10 different pediatric specialties, we develop our clinical survey.”
Other hospitals that received No. 1 rankings were the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, in diabetes and endocrinology, cancer and orthopedics; Texas Children’s Hospital in cardiology and heart surgery; Children’s Hospital Colorado in gastrointestinal surgery and gastroenterology; and Children’s National Hospital in neonatology.
Harder explained that the measures they used to evaluate hospitals were developed with input by experts in each of the 10 specialties, as well as advisors in infectious diseases and radiology.
“We have developed this clinical inventory, and then we have refined it each year with both feedback from hospitals, but importantly, from the clinicians who serve on our infectious disease working group and the other working groups, who are always looking at the literature that they follow and thinking about how can U.S. News best capture the measures that are important to our peers and our patients,” he said.
Harder added that because infectious diseases affect all of the different specialties, U.S. News has a “suite of vendors who look at things like hand-washing compliance and the resources and structure of the program to make sure that we take that perspective into account in measuring the relevant specialty care areas in a pediatric hospital.”
Ten hospitals earned the Honor Roll distinction, which is awarded to pediatric centers that deliver high-quality care across multiple specialties. Of the list of more than 500 hospitals that entered, these were the top 10 institutions:
- Boston Children’s Hospital
- Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
- Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
- Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston
- Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
- Children’s Hospital Colorado, Aurora
- Children’s National Hospital, Washington, D.C.
- Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio
- UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
- Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, Palo Alto, California
The data collected for this year’s edition of Best Children’s Hospitals was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which began after the data collection period ended, according to U.S. News & World Report.
