VIDEO: Sneak peek at IDC New York with James H. Brien, DO

James H. Brien, DO, pediatric infectious disease specialist at McLane Children’s Hospital and Infectious Diseases in Children Editorial Board Member, will present “What’s Your Diagnosis?” on Sunday, Nov. 24 at the Infectious Diseases in Children Symposium in New York.

This year will mark Brien’s 27th year of presenting his column at the meeting. The presentation tests the visual diagnostic skills of the audience by showcasing a brief vignette of a patient with a medical issue, and then offers multiple diagnosis options from which to select. After audience members have chosen the diagnosis, Brien will discuss the correct answer as well as the reasons the remaining options are incorrect. 

Brien began writing “What’s Your Diagnosis?” in 1989, and he has since published approximately 340 iterations of the column. According to Brien, program directors often hang the column in resident workrooms and post the correct diagnosis at the end of the week.

“It has proven to be a very effective teaching tool,” Brien told Infectious Diseases in Children. “That’s been one of the uses that has been rewarding for me personally — the education of residents.”

“What’s Your Diagnosis?” will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. and again on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. at the symposium. Attendees can register for the meeting before Nov. 18 via the Infectious Diseases in Children Symposium website.
