Mayo Clinic named top hospital for ear, nose and throat conditions

The U.S. News & World Report has ranked the Mayo Clinic as the top hospital for ear, nose and throat conditions.

The hospital was also ranked No. 1 on the publication’s Honor Roll for best hospitals, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The publication noted that the methodology for choosing the best hospitals has traditionally relied on objective measures, including care indicators such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume and quality of nursing. However, changes were made to account for patient experience.

“In the 3 decades since U.S News began evaluating hospitals, we periodically have revamped our measures to enhance the decision support our rankings and ratings provide to patients,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analytics at U.S. News, said in a press release. “This year, we revised the methodology to incorporate new measures of patient-centered care and to enhance how we account for differences in hospitals’ patient populations. The new model provides a more comprehensive assessment that is useful to patients, families and their medical professionals.”

Because of these changes, the publication noted that comparisons to previous years’ rankings should not be made.
