ORLANDO Fla. — In this video perspective, Michelle Forcier, MD, MPH, professor of pediatrics and assistant dean of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, discusses the AAP’s recent policy statement supporting the need for “gender-affirming care” for youth.

“‘Gender-affirming care’ means we listen carefully to our patients and we hear what they tell us in terms of their gender exploration, their gender identity and their gender needs,” she said.

Forcier explained that there are numerous safe and effective masculinizing and feminizing hormones to help patients to meet their gender needs.

“These can be life-saving to our patients,” she said.
