CHOP named top pediatric teaching department by U.S. News & World Report

The department of pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has been named the best pediatrics department in the United States, as part of the 2017 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Medical Schools survey.

“We extend congratulations to our faculty and staff and particularly, to Joseph St. Geme, MD, our physician-in-chief and pediatrics department chair, for the impressive record of medical and academic excellence recognized today,” Madeline Bell, MS, president and chief executive officer of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said in a press release.

This is the fourth consecutive year the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has ranked as the No. 1 pediatrics teaching department in the survey. The Perelman School of Medicine also tied for third, with Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, San Francisco, on the list of overall best medical schools for research.

The 2017 top medical schools for pediatrics in the survey:

1. Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania;
2. Harvard University;
3. University of Cincinnati;
4. University of Colorado;
5. University of Washington;
6. Johns Hopkins University;
7. (tie) Baylor College of Medicine;
7. (tie) University of California, San Francisco;
9. (tie) University of Pittsburgh;
9. (tie) Washington University in St. Louis; and,
11. University of California, Los Angeles.

Data from the report were compiled by U.S. News & World Report and rely on expert opinions and statistical indicators to measure and rank the quality of graduate school programs. To compile the data, administrators, academics and professionals were surveyed between 2015 and 2016.
