Solgar, Inc. recalls child dietary supplement

Solgar, Inc. has voluntarily recalled ABC Dophilus Powder, a dietary supplement for infants and children, according to an FDA press release.

CDC testing indicated the presence of Rhizopus oryzae, which can cause mucormycosis, in 1.75 oz containers of Solgar ABC Dophilus Powder.

The product has an expiration date of July 31, 2015, and was distributed to Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, the United Kingdom and Israel via pharmacies, retail stores, wholesale and the Internet. Product distribution has been suspended.

Uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, organ transplantation, neutropenia and skin trauma are risk factors for mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis may be particularly harmful to premature infants, children and those with weakened immune systems. The infection rarely occurs in otherwise healthy patients.

The FDA and Solgar, Inc. are further investigating the source of the problem.
