Sulfa agents allowed for full recovery from severe type 19 pneumococcal meningitis
SAN DIEGO — Stanford T. Shulman, MD, of Lurie Children’s Hospital and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, discusses a past case of severe type 19 pneumococcal meningitis that presented at his hospital in 1939.
Following treatment with pyridine sulfanilamide, the patient made a full recovery from a disease that was mostly fatal before the introduction of sulfa agents.
