Pediatricians receive awards from PIDS

The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society presented several awards during the recent 2011 Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting in Denver.

During the 33rd Annual Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) Awards Program and Reception, partially sponsored by SLACK Incorporated, Infectious Diseases in Children Editorial Board member Kathryn M. Edwards, MD, received the Distinguished Physician Award. This award is presented annually to a pediatrician who has an extensive and distinguished career in pediatric infectious diseases marked by significant accomplishments and contributions in infectious diseases, including those as a clinician, educator and/or investigator.

David Bernstein, MD, MA, the Albert Sabin Professor of Pediatrics and former director of the division of infectious diseases at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, received the Stanley A. Plotkin Lectureship in Vaccinology.

The Distinguished Service Award was given to Joseph W. St. Geme III, MD, who is chair of the department of pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center. This award recognizes a society member who has made an outstanding contribution to the specialty of pediatric infectious diseases. Awards are given at the discretion and selection of the society’s president.

The Burtis Burr Breese Award, given to Diana Pappas, MD, JD, is presented yearly to the authors of the paper published in The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal that best illustrates the principles and practices of Dr. Burtis Burr Breese.
