Infants in whom the two-dose rotavirus vaccination series was initiated were more likely to comply with the series schedule than infants who initiated the three-dose schedule, according to study results.
Researchers in the United States aimed to compare completion and dosing schedule compliance rates for the two rotavirus vaccines currently approved in the United States: three-dose RotaTeq (Merck) and two-dose Rotarix (GlaxoSmithKline).
Eligible participants were children aged younger than 1 year who initiated a series between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2009, as reported by health insurance claims data in the United States.
An 84.3% completion rate was observed among 55,584 infants in both cohorts. Completion rates were higher in the Rotarix cohort than in the RotaTeq cohort, 91% vs. 83.4% (P,.001). This resulted in a multivariate-adjusted relative risk of 1.07 (95% CI, 1.06-1.08).
FDA-approved administration schedule compliance rates were 75% in the Rotarix group and 59.5% in the RotaTeq group (P,.001). For the harmonized schedule, full compliance rates were 83.3% for Rotarix and 76.4% for RotaTeq (P,.001).
