LAS VEGAS – The combination of OCT and OCT angiography provides data on the structure and function of the retina and choroid, allowing the optometrist to decide if referral is necessary, Julie Rodman, OD, MS, FAAO, said at Vision Expo West.

“OCT allows us a noninvasive, cross-sectional view of the retinal anatomy, providing excellent information about structural abnormalities that live in the retina and choroids,” Rodman told Healio.

When clinicians are unsure about the necessity of referral, “it allows us to keep patients in house longer that maybe do not need to be referred,” she said.

OCT and OCT-A, when used in tandem, provide 100% of both the structure and function of the retina and choroid, Rodman said.
