CHICAGO – Patients with sickle cell disease should be examined yearly, with a dilated fundus exam and macular OCT, Daniel Epshtein, OD, FAAO, said at Optometry’s Meeting.
Those with proliferative sickle cell retinopathy should be checked every 6 months with wide-field fluorescein angiography and referred to retina “because they most likely will require treatment or very careful monitoring,” he said.
